Enshittification: It’s about money, not users

The term ‘enshittification’ was coined by author and blogger Cory Doctorow. You can read his long essay on it here . So it’s about how the quality of online platforms’ services is gradually reduced in order to increase profits.

It’s all about making money for the platform and its shareholders, other goals are not pursued. The longer a platform exists, the more it focuses on money instead of what users want. According to Doctorow, enshittification eventually causes a platform to die, for example because a better alternative comes along that users go to. And that, according to him, is a good thing.

How do municipalities make the right choices and connect with the needs of residents with their social media? If that happens, more residents will follow their social media pages and the reach will be increased. This helps with the distribution of information to residents.
