The EU is preparing for a tense discussion on the state of rule of law when Sweden also Voiced leaders meet for a European Council (EUCO) summit on Thursday. A debate in the European Parliament on Tuesday delivered a preview of that showdown, with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and MEPs clashing with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
The stakes are high:
The Commission will start “written procedures” to trigger a mechanism that could gambling database restrict the disbursal of EU budget funds against a number of countries over breaches of EU standards in the next few weeks, Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said Tuesday, while refusing to confirm whether Warsaw would be a target.
